Canon Eos 1Dmk3 Autofocus issues........? Read on!

Hi All,

There's been a lot of talk on the web forums about photographers suffering autofocussing issues when using the new EOS 1DMk3 and to be honest, we've been very much unaffected by people telling us this, (Howard and Ian apart, sorry!).

Anyhow, reading Rob Galbraith over the weekend, it looks like there may be an answer to all these problems.

Here it is! The finally awaited Canon 40D! (ok so we are still waiting on the 1Ds Mark3, but lets check out what this little beauty has to offer…)

Before we begin, I’ll me introduce myself to The Flash Central blog, and as a new member to The Flash Centre. I am James or Jim, no actually Jim 2 otherwise we’ll get mixed up with Birmingham’s Jim. A recent university graduate in Photography from Southampton, I am currently residing within the Rental Department at the London branch, whilst taking full opportunity in learning to my hearts content with all the Elinchrom, Canon and Phase systems, so feel free to pop in and have a chat with us…

To also try out the 40D & 580Mk11 flash gun with Elinchrom’s Universal Skyport Kit!...

So its Highlights include…!

  • 10.1 MP CMOS sensor – Max 6.5FPS
  • DIGIC III processor
  • Lighter, Tougher Magnesium Alloy body (as pictured above)
  • 3.0” inch LCD screen with “Live-View” and a larger brighter viewfinder! :D
  • Hi Precision 9 cross-type ( + ) AF Points.
  • EOS Integrated Cleaning System
  • 14-bit A/D converter
  • New 1Ds style Menu Layout…Brilliant New sRAW mode

Ok, so first impressions? It is significantly more comfortable in handling, with the slightly weightier body this gives reassurance to you that it is much more of a solid camera. Its magnesium body with added “environmental seals” does make the process of adding your memory card, speedlight attachment and use of camera buttons that much more like a professional model. Canon have really gone to town in bringing the essentials from a professional camera body into the more affordable pro enthusiast market, but if you really don’t need the large file sizes generated from the top models, this 40D step up will serve you and your pocket brilliantly! (Especially with Canons Cash back promotion, you get £50 cash stashed back in your pocket) until 31st December

Recently there has been a technical review on the 40D in the British Journal of Photography (Volume 154 week of 03/10/07) and this two part review gives you a greater insight into its Image Processing, noise, chromatic artefacts and overall performance with a variety of higher end lenses. Check it out as its worthy of a background read. If you’re in the store, then we should have a copy here. J

Having done a small wedding job and photographing chocolate for a local company, the camera itself handles far better then the 30D, and I especially liked the ‘AF ON’ button located at the rear of the camera to be used by your right hand thumb. It brings to the user a new style of workflow in shooting which is comfortable. Autofocus speed is excellent with each new point having a cross type sensor. I did not test the newer lenses accompanying the 40D pack, though I do not wish to as it will only weaken the overall potential from the body. Great as a starter set, but do not expect much durability from the two new IS lenses.

Using the 580Mark2 flash with the camera enables a strengthened connection in its ‘locking’ feature.
I used this set up on the wedding job, and with the on flash sync attachment I was able to use the Elinchrom Skyport radio set up. This enabled me to photograph whilst having the flash on a nearby stand away from the camera and work freely and wireless.

I completely recommend this set up!! It’s easy, compact, quick to set up, cost effective and reliable! Attached you can add a flashgun soft box and away you go! A mini studio on location with solid flashguns as your lights! The universal Skyport kit will work on a variety of channels, so you will be sure that no one else’s flashgun will fire and interrupt your photography. Simple! J

The live view setting on the camera is actually a lovely added feature. Seen to many photographers as a unneeded add on, this is good in a studio/tripod set up. You will have to experiment abit to use its settings but feel free to call me and I will show you a demo.

Greater tonal range has been achieved with Canon’s new 14 bit A.D processor, this is instantly visible with print outs. Again in the BJP review there is some good description and detail on the ISO performance and resolution at different ISO levels, but I don’t want to ‘copy’ and ‘paste’ this info on here as it’s a bit cheeky though it is freely available for us all to read.
